Envy: A Powerful Emotion to Harness
Inspiration: [Shreyas Doshi take on beating Envy]
Envy is a powerful emotion that can shape our decisions, often leading us to act without fully considering the consequences. We end up paying a very high cost on some of these decisions if we acted purely out of Envy without looking inward and asking ourselves what we really want, what we are good at, and what truly makes us happy.
Envy as a Motivator Early On, but a Hindrance Later
At the beginning of our careers, comparing ourselves to others can drive us to improve and reach new heights. However, as we gain more experience and clarity about our own path, these comparisons become less relevant. Every individual has a unique journey shaped by different motivations, passions, purpose, family responsibilities, and life circumstances. Simon Sinek's concept of infinite games suggests that we should focus on playing our own game, not trying to win someone else's. Comparing isolated aspects of your journey (titles, compensation, social stature etc) to someone else’s can distort your sense of purpose and derail your growth.
Understanding and Managing Envy
The key to managing envy is not to suppress it, but to acknowledge it when it arises. Envy often comes from a lack of self-awareness or uncertainty about our own identity and strengths. When we're unclear about who we are or what makes us unique, we may look outward for direction. This can lead us to compare ourselves with others and feel envious of their achievements. Instead, it's important to reflect on why you're feeling envious and to use that insight to better understand your own motivations and values.
Focus on Your Own Strengths and Commit to Your Own Path
Rather than comparing yourself to others, focus on understanding your own strengths and passions which will truly help overcome Envy. The most fulfilling journey is one where you develop expertise in your own craft, one that aligns with your natural talents and interests. By committing to this path, you'll find greater satisfaction and success than by trying to compete in someone else's game.
Take inspiration from Envy to identify areas of improvement and excel in your craft.
